Life is getting so busy that even eating our five-a-day is too
time-consuming – and the first casualty of the fruit fallout is the
humble orange.
Sales are falling for the third year running because people cannot be bothered to peel them.
But while oranges fall out of fashion, easy-peelers such as satsumas are enjoying record popularity.
‘We only spend 15 minutes eating lunch on average,’ said Prag Mistry, from importer Fruitman. ‘People find it easier to eat easy-peelers as they have so little time.’
In the past year, orange sales have dropped two per cent to 598million. But 35 per cent more satsumas (459million) and 60 per cent more tangerines (62million) have been bought, figures from researchers TNS showed.
In response to the surge, growers prefer developing new types of easy-peelers, said Marius du Plessis from fruit importer Mehadrin Tnuport Marketing.
He said: ‘I think the reason for the change is to do with the size and weight of oranges. You can pick up an 800g bag of clementines and it is enough to last you a few days whereas oranges are more bulky.’
